Families will lose half their Working for Families payments if they don’t put their kids in ECE or make sure they have the Well Child checks, under reforms to be announced by Paula Bennett the next time National needs a distraction from its failed economic management. ‘When you’re getting public money, the government can demand anything of you: even if it isn’t compulsory and even if you can’t afford it,’ said Bennett. ‘No-one gave a damn when we did this to beneficiary families, so this is the logical next step.’
Asked how reducing the income of families that are already poor does anything to help the children, Bennett replied ‘Fuck you, that’s how. This is a government that is committed to making platitudes and using the language of caring while kicking the shit out of the poor.
Asked if it was Nanny State to require families to put their children in ECE, Bennett replied ‘No. Stopping schools making a profit off selling junk food – that’s Nanny State. Setting lighting efficiency standards in line with the rest of the world to dramatically reduce the carbon emissions of our electricity network – that’s Nanny State. Threatening to cut off the money you use to feed your children if you’re poor or middle class and you don’t put them in voluntary education – that’s Bully State.

I demand random drug testing for politicians, loss of perks. When I heard that Bennett wants 3 and 4 year old children to attend ECE for 15 hours a week it got me thinking back to the kindergarten system 25 years ago. There usually was a waiting list for three year olds and in my area a child was age 3.9 before they attended for three afternoon sessions a week and when age 4 children went five mornings a week.
Today some kindergartens offer 20 hours ECE to 3 and 4 year olds, some are open during the school holidays and children as young as 2 can attend some kindergatens.
25 years ago there was no fee, today some fees may apply and some assistance is offered from Work and Income.

I oppose Bennett’s stigmatising the primary carer and their children. There are not enough ECE positions, the hours could be shortened to 9 a week for a 3 year old and this would help with the cost.
Has it got to the point where a child has to be at a certain place before their primary carer can receive the full entitlement to a benefit?

Is this women quite with it .Many educational experts believe that we send our children to school to early .Most kids under 5/6 are better home with mum .I know one thing Bennett would change her mind if she saw how our youngest carried on at pre-school;. Those were the days . I should add that 35 years later he is an excellent citizen . Of course we should also remember that Bennett left her baby with her mother why she went to University.All paid for by us taxpayers.
