This story and the footage has made an already wonderful day for us just so much more perfect !

  2. One Anonymous Bloke 2

I appreciate the sentiment and the motivation behind it.

Let’s face it though – sky fairies have nothing to do with basic expressions of humanity.

    • Bill 2.1

      facepalm

    • weka 2.2

      bah humbug.

      • One Anonymous Bloke 2.2.1

        I’m talking about the headline.

        • weka 2.2.1.1

I don’t think you are in any position to say to what extent his religion influenced his actions. Or anyone else’s at this distance. Particularly if you’re going to comment from a place of patronising bigotry.

Besides, I took the title to be ironic and making a point that wasn’t to do with religious belief.

You’re still raining on the parade. But by all means go ahead and make this thread into another interminable sand pit fight about religion where no-one learns anything.

Sorry if that’s harsh, but really your comment seemed completely unecessary.

          • One Anonymous Bloke 2.2.1.1.1

Excuse me, I didn’t say his religion motivated his actions. The headline said that, in a tongue-in-cheek response to the sort of hate speech we see from Slater and too many other media outlets.

It’s Williams’ humanity on display, though: if you think politicising it is “unnecessary” you’re pointing the bone in the wrong direction.

            • weka 2.2.1.1.1.1

Excuse me, I didn’t say his religion motivated his actions.

Always hard to tell with you with the general lack of explanation in your comments.

The headline said that, in a tongue-in-cheek response to the sort of hate speech we see from Slater and too many other media outlets.

That’s how you interpreted it, fair enough. I didn’t see the headline making it a religious thing so much as a thing about a class of people. There you go.

It’s Williams’ humanity on display, though: if you think politicising it is “unnecessary” you’re pointing the bone in the wrong direction.

Maybe it is, and maybe his humanity is underpinned by his religion. You wanted to make it about religion being wrong and that you know that his actions and apparently his humanity have nothing to do with his religion. I think your comment was inflammatory in a way that was uncessary for the post, plus you have no way of knowing. It’s not about not politicising, like I said, if you want to make this about atheism good, religion bad, have at it. I just thought it was off to do that.

              • One Anonymous Bloke

Religion is a product of human behaviour. It’s another example of humanity on display.

So in fact it’s human behaviour that underpins religion. You haven’t the faintest idea what I “wanted”. What I’m saying is that pretending religion motivates human behaviour is a great way to avoid a range of issues: resource scarcity in Syria, for example.

        • Bill 2.2.1.2

OAB. You wanna reflect on the sheer number of headlines that use the terms Muslim or Islam in a wholly scary, negative, ‘watch out!’ kind of a way? Maybe that’s the sole point of the post? Y’know, a wee bit of counter spin?

      • Unicus 2.2.2

Come on people this about SBW

Does anyone really imagine that the greatest ego in sport would allow himself to be up-staged by something as trivial as the rugby world cup ?

And of course the Brit media will be all over it – a man dressed in black calling himself a member of a religion they only run negative stories about . Half the Sun and Mirror readers probably believe the whole team is an ISIS front by now

A bit of a charm offensive from the NZRFU/NP wallas might be in order to get the poms to like us again . Oh and there’s the humiliation of the French to patch up , that might be a bit harder –

        .

  3. RedLogix 4

That is at least the third time in recent months SBW has exemplified a superb sense of sportsmanship. And this time – wow.

  4. One Two 5

Old enough to know better invades pitch, avoids security and prosecution? gets rewarded with players medal…

    • Bill 5.1

Don’t you remember the days when a harmless, jubilant pitch invasion was just a part and parcel of any such occasion? Shame there weren’t several hundred, or a couple of thousand, other kids (and grown ups) just like that one around.

      • Colonial Viper 5.1.1

Authoritarian types always think that the rest of society should be spineless conformists.

        • Amanda Atkinson 5.1.1.1

Like the authoritarian Greens, who want to ban everything, and told us our streets would be full of drunken carnage if the bars were open during the rugby. I’m glad we didn’t spinelessly conform to that belief.

          • One Anonymous Bloke 5.1.1.1.1

            😆

Didn’t take Amanda long to drop her pretence of apolitical disinterest, did it?

      • McGrath 5.1.2

I remember cricket in the 80’s where it seemed that half the crowd ran on. That’s simply unimaginable these days.

      • One Two 5.1.3

Playing cricket on the field during breaks was always a highlight of the day

CV and North, relax boys its not that serious

        • North 5.1.3.1

So you’ve pulled your head in a bit have ya One Tolley Two ? After a deserved spanking. I see your point though……coulda been worse……kid mighta got all the way over to Ma’a and fucked around with his plaited locks……”Old enough to know better invades pitch, avoids security and prosecution? gets rewarded with players medal…”

          • One Two 5.1.3.1.1

My head was never out there, North

You’ve managed to run with a theme which was not intended though, while revealing a penchant for spankings and mens hair

Perhaps don’t share your fetishes in my direction eh

      • millsy 5.1.4

You watch those old matches on youtube — it really is an awesome sight seeing the crowd invade a pitch when the final whistle blew. The ultamite expression of euphoria.

    • North 5.2

      Thank you, Shrew One Two.

“Sitting up straight now – Shrew One Two Shrew One Two…..fifty times ’til you learn now……Shrew One Two Shrew One Two……”

Soooo fucking Bennett / Tolley / Collins !

“Hey, who’s that weirdo hangin’ round the sheds again ? Get that hair in a knot Ma’a……”

  5. Olwyn 6

I admire Sonny Bill – a great sportsman and a decent and gracious man as far as I can see. But I was disappointed when I read this line on Stuff: Williams has been just one part of a charm offensive that’s seen the All Blacks players go out of their way to be accommodating toward media and fans during the past seven weeks.
    http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/73565629/sonny-bill-williams-presents-rugby-world-cup-winners-medal-to-boy-in-the-crowd

Can’t a beautiful gesture be left to be a beautiful gesture, without being sullied by PR terms like “charm offensive”? It is as if the author sees low, self-serving motives as the only legitimate motives.

    • Bill 6.1

Yeah, that’s a particularly fcked angle to throw in there.

As you suggest, maybe seeking to diminish SBW’s gesture by suggesting it was just part of some “charm offensive” speaks more to the author’s own dearth of humanity – or ability to recognise as such – than anything else.

      • RedLogix 6.1.1

Yeah – it just reads as a vapid, terminally nihilistic bit of cynicism. And sadly it probably reflects the reality of the world these people work in.

So much of what we talk about here comes back to this one thing – that neo-liberalism and it’s horsemen have crushed so much of what we used to be able to believe in.

I was reading last night an interesting interview with Alan Bennett, British actor and playwright, in the Guardian. There was this interesting line:

“There has been so little that has happened to England since the 1980s that I have been happy about or felt able to endorse. One has only had to stand still to become a radical.”

        http://www.theguardian.com/stage/2015/oct/31/alan-bennett-lady-in-the-van-film-interview

      • One Anonymous Bloke 6.1.2

It was Steve Hansen who said it was part of a desire to “leave this country with people understanding we have good values and aren’t bad people to be around…There are a lot of people who have realised we aren’t the big bad ogres we are sometimes printed to be in the media in this part of the world. We are ordinary people who can play rugby reasonably well. Life is too short to be serious all the time. If you are serious all the time it’s boring.”

So no, I don’t think he was trying to diminish Williams’ gesture.

        • Bill 6.1.2.1

It was the author of the piece who wrote : Williams has been just one part of a charm offensive that’s seen the All Blacks players go out of their way to be accommodating toward media and fans during the past seven weeks

And fuck me, but wasn’t that the quote pulled out of the piece by Olwyn? Why, yes it was.

It really is beyond me this apparent desire on your part to shit opposition and protest to anything said on this thread OAB.

edit – apologies for the last sentence. Possibly just being a bit tetchy.

          • One Anonymous Bloke 6.1.2.1.1

I think Hansen’s remarks support Olwyn’s quote, and I agree that PR exercises can sully genuine gestures.

I’m not trying to shit on anything, Bill. If you want to go down that road, what exactly does making a blatantly political point (the headline) about media bias and character assassination do?

Why, it invites political analysis beyond “Williams’ magnificent gesture”, no?

Back to my original point: the MSM routinely cites religion as a motivator for heinous acts. The headline neatly mocks that behaviour, and got me thinking that said heinous acts are also “humanity on display”. Treating religion as the motivator denies reality, which is probably one reason for doing it.

Probably a bit deep for a post about media racism though.

  6. DH 8

I enjoyed that, it’s nice when it all goes right and that was handled just perfect by the boys in black. SBW showed a side I for one never knew he had, good on ‘im.

  7. BM 9

More patronizing whitey stuff that seems to be so synonymous with the left.

    • One Anonymous Bloke 9.1

Who’s being patronised? If you think it’s SBW you’re just demonstrating that the point went over your head.

      • BM 9.1.1

        Muslims.

        • RedLogix 9.1.1.1

Nah – sorry BM – the point went that-away —->

          • BM 9.1.1.1.1

So you’d have no problem if the heading was

            Woman Gives Away Medal
            or
            Maori Gives Away Medal

There’s no need to single out the mans religion.

            • One Anonymous Bloke 9.1.1.1.1.1

              😆 🙄

Yes, it’s wrong to single out the man’s religion. That’s the point the headline is making, and it went right over your head. I note your failure to get bent out of shape when people talk about “Muslim” extremists.

              • BM

I can’t stand Slater and his crusade against Muslims.

Sure there’s some fucking psychos but the vast, vast majority don’t go around slaughtering people in some deranged religious jihad.

Most Muslims are like SBW they just do there thing and get on with life.

                This post heading reads like:

‘Look Muslims don’t just spend there days cutting the heads off infidels, they can also be civilized and do nice things”

                Patronizing to the extreme.

                • One Anonymous Bloke

BM, the headline mocks the behaviour you’re complaining about. That went over your head, even though Bill explicitly pointed it out at 2.2.1.2

                  • North

It’s called “Concern Trolling”. Fullas get double time for that. Forget that it’s Sunday. Penal rate don’t apply on that score but it does for CT. And that’s as it should Bloody Bloody Well Be……a wicked impost to take the guy away from his family……sorry, as you were……his customary bigotry. Bad as asking a straight man to come over all gay for the day !

                  • Adele

                    Teenaa koutou katoa

I agree with BM. The headline is patronising.

I get that it’s a mocking commentary on Slater but why choose to put the two in the same ball park?

As a way to score points against Beezlebub and his team, it sucks.

In the left corner we have Sonny, a magnificent athlete and with so much charm Grandma would readily swap Grandpa for a SBW medallion.

Still in the dressing room is Slater, who deserves nothing more than to be smoked by security and ejected from the stadium.

Having the two side by side is just wrong as it takes from one and feeds the other.

                • infused

That was my reaction above. I know what the headline is trying to do, but its so childish it makes for cringeworthy reading.

        • One Anonymous Bloke 9.1.1.2

          Whoosh!

    • North 9.2

WTF ?????……BM (alcolmX) you from now on.

  8. North 10

“NZ Scores Twice In One Day !
BM Runs Away With World Cup
In Missing The Entire Point !”

Not to worry……BM and PM ‘celebrating’ in locked-door changing sheds. Faaark……that’s ’17 General Election in the bag ! Now…….were my first language Asian……

  9. mary_a 11

SBW and Charlie Lines emerged as the stars of the day. Great gesture from Sonny, a real sporting attitude, making a little boy’s life brighter. Sweet dreams Charlie 🙂
